Paul Harvey
|
KSAL radio station went on air in 1937, with a youthful Paul Harvey at the age of only 19 years soon assuming the role of KSAL Station Manager until 1940. Paul Harvey would officially embark upon his illustrious broadcasting career in the heart of Kansas in Salina to eventually reach a true pinnacle of recognition in 2005 when he was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House. In a particular 1951 "escapade" Harvey launched his career into the national spotlight by demonstrating how lax the security was at the Argonne National Laboratory, a nuclear test facility 20 miles west of Chicago, with direct links to the Manhattan Project and the University of Chicago. This led to a grand jury consideration of indictment for espionage against Harvey, but the grand jury would ultimately decline on indicting him. Yet it should also be noted that the FBI had kept in excess of 1,400 pages of documentation pertaining to Harvey's "participatory journalism". On April 1st of 1951, ABC Radio Network debuted the 'Paul Harvey News and Comment' show that aired weekdays at noon, giving new dimension to Paul's "The Rest of The Story." |

KIUL Announcer Tony Jewell
|
Signing on in 1935, Station KIUL has been broadcasting Kansas City Royals' baseball since the team's formation in 1969. Ten years earlier though, the young KIUL broadcaster Tony Jewell had been summoned to a major crime scene in 1959.
In Tony's words, "I didn't know what happened. It was unbelievable, a gruesome sight. I spent an hour or more at the Clutter home."
Tony Jewell would be the first to report on this tragically infamous case with his own eyewitness account that he delivered over the air to an unexpecting early Sunday radio audience on November 15th of 1959. Soon thereafter, noted author Truman Capote would pen his book about the case, In Cold Blood. Tony Jewell would continue on with his career and eventually become the President of the KAB Kansas Association of Broadcasters, and he is now honored in name with the annual presentation of the Tony Jewell Award for Community Service. |

Johnny Carson - 1965
|
First licensed in Lincoln, Nebaska in 1924, KFAB would later link up with WBBM of Chicago via telephone line in 1939, and provide nearly coast to coast coverage on the CBS signal frequency. Then in 1948, KFAB had relocated to Omaha where a young undergraduate from the University of Nebraska, Johnny Carson, would embark upon his own broadcasting career with KFAB during the same year. It does seem somewhat amazing then that some of the great broadcasting legends in history share their career beginnings from these humble regions of America's Heartland. The reasoning, their voices were pure and without an accent. |
