UFO Reykawvik Summit: A Simple Matter of SynchronicityPrimed with a heightened sense of anticipation, an approximate audience of 100 million television viewers tuned in to watch the ABC-TV Network premier broadcast of the movie The Day After on November 20, 1983. The fateful shock and awe of the film commences with Kansas City being scripted as a ground zero designate in which several nuclear detonations vaporize the entire twin metroplex in a horrific instant of mass destruction. Lawrence, Kansas – just 25 miles to the west along Interstate 70 – soon suffers from and succumbs to the devastating effects of radioactive fallout. From the comfort of their homes and living rooms, television viewers safely witnessed the graphic depiction of an atmospheric horror in which a nuclear winter soon rains eerily down upon the city of Lawrence, Kansas. Actor John Lithgow portrays one of the surviving civilians who poignantly attempts to make contact with others over a citizen’s band radio transmitter, albeit with a gnawing sense of desperate futility.
Meanwhile, back in Washington, D.C., a very different sense of concern had slithered in, but for those who treat war as a legitimate means to an end, a profitable commodity. It simply had them wondering: What the hell are they doing in Midway USA? Damn it! Not again! It must have appeared as though Dorothy and her little dog Toto were out to ruin everything for them all over again. But could it really happen this time? The fateful tossing of a bucket of enchanted water on their thriving industry of fear known then as the Cold War. Securely perched upon their high vantage point, the Generals of the Pentagon were starting to hallucinate, along with the Generals of the foods. Hell, even the General at the mills and the other advertisers had all reneged. While in Battle Creek, Michigan, the robust snap, the awesome crackle, and the overzealous pop were all in stand-down, as all in Washington ran straight to the nearest hardened bunkers. But this was one wheat treat that simply scared the crap out of their collective sweet tooth. The Capitol was on high alert! Drop, Tuck, and Cover! Prior to the film’s release, there were many who couldn’t wait to get their hands on an advance copy for review. Time was needed back in Washington, D.C. to prepare for damage assessment and control. As it turns out, then President Ronald Reagan was one in particular who had requested and reviewed a copy of the film well before its actual airing. The Day After truly disturbed the Commander-in-Chief, as well as all the military brass. But it was too late for the Generals. Djinn (the Jinni) was already out of the bottle, and the movie had left its searing and distinctive mark on President Ronald Reagan. As President of the United States, Reagan then sent his advanced copy of the film directly to Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev, who was similarly impacted by the jarring gravity of The Day After’s dire warning. Quickly sensing an early spring thaw, Gorbachev responded with an earnest invitation for the two leaders to meet for a mutually critical summit in either London, England or Reykjavik, Iceland. Yes indeed it was possible, and on October 11th of 1986, Reagan and Gorbachev successfully engaged in what was to become known as the historic Reykjavik Summit. The intermediate-range nuclear forces INF Treaty would be signed the following year on December 8th of 1987 to implement the eventual elimination of both U.S. and Soviet short-range and intermediate-range nuclear missiles. One essential fact though, the historical significance of the film The Day After is indeed quite profound. Not only did it leave an indelible impression on the American psyche, it also served as a forward moving catalyst for full disclosure regarding nuclear arsenals and a global call for their removal. Today however, full disclosure remains an ultimate goal in another crucial arena as well, the immediate release of complete and unaltered government documents pertaining to UFO sightings and interactions in general, and UFO activity reported/occurring at nuclear power and weapons sites in particular. The UFO Reykawvik Summit 2011 in Lawrence, Kansas will soon serve as a similar catalyst to further the call for responsive action on this long overdue right to disclosure. In light of this, one of our principle guest speakers who will be addressing the Reykawvik Summit, Stanton Friedman, has issued an e-mail alert requesting clarification on a small matter of linguistic liberty. Having long ago earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree in Physics from the University of Chicago, Stan is imminently qualified to make such astute and pertinent observations. REY-KAW-VIK is sort of a Kansas thing now. The Nation of the Kaw “The Wind People” were the first known inhabitants of Kansas.
The Koln-za/Kanza/Kaw Nation will always be an intrinsic and valued part of Lawrence. The same holds true with Haskell Indian Nations University, which was founded in 1884. |
